On Friday, Pakistani military forces mounted an offensive, code-named "Khyber One," in the Bara area of the mountainous and troubled Khyber Agency, where militants are said to have holed up in remote hideouts.
Senior security sources said ten militants were also injured in the operation. A curfew has been imposed in Bara and people are not allowed to either enter or leave the area.
A military source, speaking on the condition of anonymity, also said some militants are believed to have escaped towards the Afghan border, adding, "We are chasing them and our forces advanced and took control of the areas which remained in the control of the terrorists for the past many years." On Thursday, Pakistani air force jets pounded hideouts in Tirah Valley of Khyber Agency, killing at least 21 militants.
The Pakistani army has been fighting since June to demolish bases belonging to the pro-Taliban militants in the tribal areas.
The militant groups in Pakistan have carried out numerous attacks against Pakistani security forces and civilians.
Many Pakistanis have lost their lives in bombings and other militant attacks since 2001, when the Pakistani government entered an alliance with Washington in its so-called war on terror.
The Pakistani army says it has killed more than 1,000 militants since June when it started its mop-up operations along its border with Afghanistan. At least 86 Pakistani soldiers have been also killed during the operations.
